Saber-Toothed Cats

Smilodon fatalis was the first confirmed fossil found at La Brea Tar Pits, and excavators have since recovered the remains of more than 2,000 saber-toothed cats from its asphalt seeps. Those numbers helped make it California's official state fossil in 1974.
