Hwang is a Los Angeles-born artist who practices gyotaku, the traditional Japanese technique of inking a real specimen and pressing paper to it, along with European nature printing. His work has been exhibited at the Natural History Museum, and he created a gyotaku print of a rare Pacific footballfish, a deep-sea anglerfish that washed up on a Southern California beach and joined the museum's ichthyology collection.
